Work Hours Calculator

Work out how long a shift lasts. Enter your clock-in and clock-out times and an optional break to see the hours worked, both as a decimal and as hours and minutes.

How to calculate hours worked

  1. Enter your clock-in time and clock-out time in 24-hour format.
  2. Add any unpaid break in minutes.
  3. Read the total worked time as decimal hours and as hours and minutes.

Examples

Day shift with a lunch break

Clock in 09:00, clock out 17:30, break 30 minutes
8.0 hours (8h 0m)

Overnight shift

Clock in 23:00, clock out 07:00, no break
8.0 hours (8h 0m)

Frequently asked questions

How is the worked time calculated?

It takes the minutes between your clock-out and clock-in times, then subtracts the unpaid break. The result is shown as decimal hours and as hours and minutes.

Does it handle overnight or night shifts?

Yes. If the clock-out time is the same as or earlier than the clock-in time, the calculator assumes the shift crossed midnight and adds 24 hours, so 23:00 to 07:00 is 8 hours.

Why is 7.5 hours shown instead of 7 hours 30 minutes?

Decimal hours are easier for payroll and invoicing because you multiply them straight by an hourly rate. The calculator shows both formats so you can use whichever you need.

What time format should I use?

Use 24-hour HH:MM, so 9 in the morning is 09:00 and half past five in the afternoon is 17:30. Breaks are entered in minutes.

Is my data private?

Yes. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Your times and break are never sent to a server or stored anywhere.
