How to use the time card calculator

  1. Enter the start time, end time and any unpaid break minutes for each day you worked.
  2. Set your hourly rate and the weekly hours after which overtime starts (usually 40).
  3. Read the daily hours, weekly total, regular and overtime hours and your gross pay.

Examples

A standard 40-hour week

Five days of 09:00 to 17:00 with a 60 minute break, rate 20
35 regular hours, 0 overtime, 700 gross pay

A week with overtime

Six days of 09:00 to 17:00, no break, rate 20, overtime after 40
40 regular hours, 8 overtime hours, 1040 gross pay

Frequently asked questions

How are my weekly hours totaled?

Each day's hours are the time from clock-in to clock-out minus any unpaid break, then all days are added together. Hours are rounded to two decimals so they are easy to multiply by a rate.

Do unpaid breaks reduce my hours?

Yes. The break minutes you enter are subtracted from that day's worked time. A 09:00 to 17:00 shift with a 60 minute lunch counts as 7 paid hours, not 8.

How is overtime calculated?

Hours up to the weekly threshold you set (40 by default) are regular hours; anything above it is overtime, paid at the multiplier you choose, which defaults to 1.5 times the regular rate.

Overtime rules vary by location, so are these numbers official?

No. Overtime law differs by country, state and employer, and some places use daily rather than weekly thresholds. Use this as an estimate and check your own rules or payroll for the binding figures.

Can it handle overnight shifts?

Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats it as crossing midnight and adds 24 hours, so 22:00 to 06:00 counts as 8 hours.

Are my times sent to a server?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser, so the hours, rate and pay you enter never leave your device.
