Frequently asked questions

Is this PTO policy legal advice?

No. This generator produces a general starting template, not legal advice. Time off, sick leave, and carryover rules vary by country, state, and city, and some are legally required. Have a qualified HR professional or employment lawyer review the policy before you adopt it.

Is my information sent to a server or stored?

No. The policy is assembled entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type, including your company name and the day counts, is uploaded, logged, or saved anywhere. Closing the tab clears it.

What is the difference between accrual, lump-sum, and unlimited PTO?

Accrual grants a set amount of PTO each month, so the balance builds over the year. Lump-sum gives the full annual allocation up front at the start of the year. Unlimited has no fixed number of days; employees take what they need with manager approval, and there is no balance to track or pay out.

What does carryover mean, and what is use-it-or-lose-it?

Carryover lets employees move unused PTO into the next year, often up to a cap you set. A use-it-or-lose-it policy means unused PTO does not roll over and is forfeited at year end. Some places limit or ban use-it-or-lose-it, so check local law before choosing it.

How much advance notice should employees give for time off?

It depends on your team, but two weeks is a common default for planned time off, with shorter notice expected for emergencies. The generator writes the notice period you set into the Requesting Time Off section so expectations are clear.

Can I edit the policy after generating it?

Yes. The output is plain text you can paste into any document, handbook, or HR system. Treat it as a draft: add company-specific rules, fill in any details, and have it reviewed before you publish or distribute it.
