Lean Body Mass Calculator

Lean body mass (LBM) is everything in your body that is not fat: muscle, bone, organs and water. Enter your weight, height and sex to estimate it with the Boer formula, or add a measured body fat percentage to get an exact split of lean mass and fat mass.

How to use the lean body mass calculator

  1. Select your sex and enter your weight in kilograms and height in centimetres.
  2. Optionally enter a measured body fat percentage for a more precise result.
  3. Read your estimated lean body mass, fat mass and lean mass percentage.

Examples

Man using the Boer formula

Male, 80 kg, 180 cm, no body fat entered
About 61.42 kg lean mass, 18.58 kg fat mass (76.8% lean)

Man with a measured body fat percent

Male, 80 kg, 180 cm, 20% body fat
64 kg lean mass, 16 kg fat mass (80% lean)

Frequently asked questions

What is lean body mass?

Lean body mass is your total body weight minus the mass of your body fat. It includes muscle, bone, organs, connective tissue and the water in your body. It is sometimes called fat free mass.

What is lean body mass used for?

Clinicians and coaches use it to dose some medications, set protein and calorie targets, and track whether weight changes come from muscle or fat. Because muscle drives metabolism, LBM is a better fitness yardstick than scale weight alone.

How does this calculator estimate lean body mass?

By default it uses the Boer formula, which estimates LBM from your weight, height and sex. If you enter a measured body fat percentage, it skips the estimate and computes lean mass directly as weight times one minus your body fat fraction.

How accurate is the Boer formula?

It is a population estimate, so it can be off for very muscular, very lean or very heavy people. Entering a body fat percentage from calipers, a Navy tape estimate or a DEXA scan gives a far more accurate result.

Is my data sent anywhere?
