Frequently asked questions

Why are there several ideal weight formulas?

Each formula was published by different researchers for different purposes, mostly drug dosing, and they were fitted to different reference populations. None is the single correct answer, so showing them together gives you a realistic spread rather than one number.

Which formula should I use?

There is no universal best choice. Devine is the most widely cited in clinical settings, while Robinson and Miller tend to give slightly lower values. Treat the set as a range and pick a target within it that feels right for you.

What is the difference between ideal weight and the healthy weight range?

The formula values are single point estimates based only on height and sex. The healthy range is the span of weights that fall within a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 for your height, which is broader and accounts for natural variation between bodies.

Do these formulas account for body frame or muscle?

No. They use only height and sex, so they ignore frame size, muscle mass, age and body composition. A muscular athlete can sit above an ideal weight estimate while still being lean and healthy.

Should I use ideal weight to set a goal?

Use it as a rough reference, not a strict target. Weight alone is a limited measure of health. For decisions about diet or training, combine it with measures like body fat and waist size, and speak to a clinician.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Your height and sex are never uploaded or stored.
