Frequently asked questions

What is a relieving letter?

A relieving letter is a formal document an employer gives a departing employee to confirm that their resignation has been accepted and they have been relieved of all duties from a specific date. New employers often ask for it to prove you left your previous job cleanly, with no dues pending.

What is the difference between a relieving letter and an experience letter?

A relieving letter confirms that you were relieved from your duties on a particular date and that there are no dues pending, so it is mainly about the end of employment. An experience letter (or service certificate) describes your role, tenure and conduct, and serves as proof of the work experience you gained. Many companies issue both, and some combine them into a single letter.

Who issues a relieving letter and when?

It is issued by the employer, usually the HR department or your reporting manager, after your notice period ends and your final clearance is complete. It is normally handed over on or shortly after your last working day, often alongside the full and final settlement.

What should a relieving letter include?

It should name the employee and the company, state the role and dates of employment, confirm the effective relieving date, note that the resignation was accepted, include a no-dues or clearance statement, add good wishes, and end with the signatory's name, title and company. This tool fills all of those in for you.

Is a relieving letter the same as a resignation acceptance letter?

They are related but not identical. A resignation acceptance letter confirms the employer has received and accepted your resignation, usually early in the notice period. A relieving letter is issued at the end and certifies that you have actually been relieved of your duties with no dues outstanding.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. The letter is generated entirely in your browser with JavaScript, so the names, dates and other details you enter are never uploaded or stored anywhere.
