Frequently asked questions
How is WPM measured?
A word is counted as 5 characters, the standard for typing tests. Gross WPM is every character you type divided by 5, per minute. Net WPM counts only the characters you got right.
What is the difference between net and gross WPM?
Gross WPM is your raw finger speed, mistakes included. Net WPM counts only correctly typed characters, so errors you leave in earn no speed and time spent fixing them lowers the rate. Net is the number that reflects usable speed.
What is a good typing speed?
Under 30 WPM is beginner, 30 to 50 is average, 50 to 70 is fast and 70 or more is pro. Most professional typists land around 65 to 80 net WPM at high accuracy.
What are the problem keys at the end?
They are the characters you mistyped most during the test. Drilling them is the fastest way to raise your accuracy and, with it, your net WPM.
Can I practice my own text?
Yes. Choose Custom and paste any text, such as a speech, a paragraph of code, or vocabulary you want to get fluent at, then type it as a timed test.
Is my typing private?
Yes. The test runs entirely in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded.
