Frequently asked questions

How do I write a cheque amount in words?

Switch to cheque mode and enter the amount, such as 1234.56. You get 'One thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and fifty-six cents', which is the line banks expect on a check. The first letter is capitalized for you.

How are large numbers named?

Numbers are grouped in threes from the right, so each group of three becomes hundreds, tens and ones followed by a scale word like thousand, million or billion. For example 1,000,000 reads as 'one million'.

What does cheque (currency) mode do differently?

Currency mode treats the value as money. The whole part becomes dollars and the two decimals become cents, with singular forms for exactly one dollar or one cent, and 'zero cents' when there is no remainder.

Why are some words hyphenated, like thirty-four?

English style hyphenates the compound numbers from twenty-one through ninety-nine. So 34 is written 'thirty-four', while round tens such as 30 or 40 stay as a single word.

Does it handle zero and negative numbers?

Yes. Zero becomes 'zero', and negative values are prefixed with 'negative', for example 'negative forty-five'. In cheque mode a negative amount reads 'Negative ... dollars and ... cents'.

Is my data private?

Yes. The conversion runs entirely in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
