Fraction Calculator

Enter two fractions and pick an operation to add, subtract, multiply or divide them. The result is reduced to lowest terms and shown as a decimal and a mixed number.

How to use the fraction calculator

  1. Type the numerator and denominator of your first fraction.
  2. Choose an operation: add, subtract, multiply or divide.
  3. Enter the second fraction to see the simplified result, decimal and mixed number.

Examples

Add two fractions

1/2 + 1/3
5/6 (0.8333..., mixed: 5/6)

Divide two fractions

1/2 / 1/4
2/1 (2, mixed: 2)

Frequently asked questions

How do you add or subtract fractions?

Put both fractions over a common denominator, then add or subtract the numerators. The calculator uses the product of the two denominators, combines the numerators and reduces the result for you.

What is a common denominator?

A common denominator is a single denominator that both fractions can share. Multiplying the two denominators always gives one; the answer is then simplified so you still get the smallest equivalent fraction.

How do you multiply and divide fractions?

To multiply, multiply the numerators together and the denominators together. To divide, flip the second fraction (its reciprocal) and multiply. Dividing by a fraction with a zero numerator is undefined.

How are results simplified?

The calculator divides the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor, so 2/4 becomes 1/2. The denominator is always shown as a positive number.

What is a mixed number?

A mixed number combines a whole number and a proper fraction, like 1 2/3 for the improper fraction 5/3. The tool shows the mixed form whenever the result is larger than one whole.

Does the calculator run privately in my browser?

Yes. The math runs entirely on your device with JavaScript. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored, so you can use it offline once the page has loaded.
