Frequently asked questions

Is the tip calculated on the bill before or after tax?

This calculator tips on the pre-tax bill, which is the common custom since tax is not part of the service. Tax is added to the total separately, so the tip never charges you on the tax.

What does round up do?

Round up rounds each person's share up to a clean amount so the table never underpays. It shows the rounded figure and the small surplus collected, which can cover the rounding or act as a little extra tip.

How is rounding handled?

Every money figure is rounded to two decimal places. On an uneven split the exact per-person shares can add up a cent or two short of the total, which is why the round up option exists.

Can I split a bill without a tip?

Yes. Leave the tip at 0 percent and the calculator simply divides the bill (plus any tax) by the number of people. The same works for tax: leave it at 0 to skip it.

Is my bill data saved anywhere?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or stored, so your bill and party details stay private.
